In the fall of our freshman year, Ari and Ethan met for the first time to recap a math test we had just taken. Instead of talking Calculus, we found ourselves discussing our past businesses and a mutual desire for a better way to stay entertained in our dorms during the pandemic. By the end of lunch, we had created a business plan for Gate TVs and submitted an application to Thought Into Action (TIA).
When TIA accepted us, the fun started. We got to work spending all of our free time surveying friends, building a website, designing a logo, forming an LLC, obtaining a Tax EIN, opening a business checking account, and finding a supplier. In the spring, we shifted our focus to marketing in anticipation of our grand opening for fall 2021.
With official approval from the school, we bought an insurance policy and did over $6,000 in revenue during our first two semesters operating. TIA was impressed with our traction and extended their maximum seed-grant to us. This allowed us to purchase more TV inventory ahead of time, leading to quicker delivery times for our customers.
We are thrilled about the recent addition to our team, Natalie Rong, who is talented at marketing and everything visual. Now working as Creative Director, we are excited about our momentum and looking forward to continuing growing.
